Why a proper wall charger

The garage upgrade that pays for itself every night

The cord in the boot is a backup, not a charging plan. A smart wall charger fills the car overnight on cheap power — or your own solar — safely, on its own circuit.

Full battery every morning

Plug in when you get home, wake up to a full charge — no servo queues, no public-charger apps, no range anxiety.

10× faster than a powerpoint

The portable cord that came with the car adds ~10 km of range an hour. A 7.4kW wall charger adds up to 50 km — a 22kW three-phase unit up to 130 km.

Charge on cheap power — or sunshine

Smart scheduling charges off-peak automatically, and solar-smart models charge on your excess solar for next to nothing per kilometre.

Safe, dedicated circuit

EV charging is hours of heavy load. It belongs on its own protected circuit sized for the job — not shared with the fridge and the garage door.

What it costs

Real installed from-prices, inc GST

From-prices include the charger and a dedicated protected circuit with up to 5 m of cabling. Longer runs add $210–$930 depending on distance and phase; runs past 22 m or to a detached garage are priced from your photos — the builder shows every adder before you submit.

The range

Chargers we fit and stand behind

Evnex is Daniel's main pick — NZ-made smart chargers with a local support team, solar smarts and a 4-year residential warranty. Tesla and Fronius options where they suit your setup better.

What's included

Every charger installation includes

01

Charger supplied and installed

The charger itself plus full installation by a licensed electrician — one from-price covering supply, install and GST, confirmed before anything is booked.

02

Dedicated protected circuit

A new circuit runs from your switchboard to the charger with its own safety switch, protected by premium German-engineered Hager gear — not bargain-bin breakers.

03

Quality weatherproof isolator

A high-quality isolator fitted at the charger so it can be safely switched off for servicing — weatherproof-rated for outdoor spots.

04

Cables concealed wherever possible

Runs go through wall cavities, roof spaces and behind linings first — and where conduit is unavoidable, it's straight, level and tucked out of sight.

05

App set up before we leave

Charger paired to its app, off-peak or solar charging schedules configured, and a walkthrough so you know exactly how it all works.

06

Tested, certified & photographed

Every install is tested, covered by an electrical certificate of compliance (CCEW), photographed for your records — and the workmanship is warranted for life.

FAQs

EV charger questions, answered

How much does home EV charger installation cost?

Supplied and installed from $1,575 inc GST for the Evnex E2 Flex, including a dedicated protected circuit with up to 5 m of cabling. Our most popular pick, the solar-smart Evnex E2 Core, is $1,875 installed, the Tesla Wall Connector is $1,760, and three-phase 22kW charging starts from $2,895 with the Evnex X22. Longer cable runs add $210–$930 depending on distance and phase — the online builder shows your exact from-price before you give us any details.

What's included in the installed price?

Everything: the charger, a dedicated circuit protected by premium Hager gear at the switchboard, a quality weatherproof isolator at the charger, cables concealed wherever possible, app setup and pairing, full testing and a CCEW electrical certificate. Workmanship is warranted for life.

Do I need three-phase power for an EV charger?

No — most homes are single-phase, and a 7.4kW charger on a single-phase supply adds up to 50 km of range per hour, which fills most EVs overnight easily. Three-phase homes can go to 22kW — up to 130 km of range per hour, car dependent. Not sure which you have? A photo of your switchboard tells Daniel instantly, and if you want 22kW on a single-phase home he'll price the supply upgrade alongside the charger.

Can't I just charge from a normal powerpoint?

You can, slowly — the portable cord that comes with most EVs adds only about 10 km of range per hour, and it's hours of heavy load on a circuit that was never designed for it. A wall charger is up to 10× faster and runs on its own dedicated, protected circuit sized for the job.

Which charger should I get if I have solar?

A solar-smart charger — the Evnex E2 Core ($1,875 installed) and E2 Plus ($2,170) charge on your excess solar automatically, so you're driving on sunshine. If you have a Fronius inverter, the Fronius Wattpilot integrates natively and charges on pure excess solar. The Evnex Power Sensor Kit (+$249) adds whole-home load monitoring so charging follows your real solar export.

I drive a Tesla — what do you recommend?

The Tesla Wall Connector ($1,760 installed) is the one most Tesla owners ask for — 7.3 m cable, Tesla app scheduling, and it charges any Type 2 EV so it still works if the next car isn't a Tesla. The Evnex range also charges Teslas perfectly well and adds solar smarts if you have panels.

Can you install a charger in an apartment or townhouse?

Yes — Daniel does strata installs regularly. They need body-corporate sign-off and often metering in common areas, so they're designed per building from your photos and plans, and priced as a complete project. Send the photos through the builder and he'll design it for your building.

What if my garage is a long way from the switchboard?

The builder asks how far the cable run is. Up to 5 m is included in the from-price; 5–11 m adds $210–$250 and 11–22 m adds $745–$930 depending on phase. Runs past 22 m or to a detached garage are priced from your photos, since heavier cable and sometimes trenching come into it.

Is the work certified and warranted?

Every install is done by a licensed electrical contractor (Licence 470836C), tested, and covered by an electrical certificate of compliance (CCEW). Evnex chargers carry a 4-year residential warranty, other brands their full manufacturer warranty — and our installation workmanship is warranted for life.
